Apply For AIMS Small Research Grants in Climate Change Science

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS NEI; www.nexteinstein.org) invites early career African academics of postdoctoral standing to apply for the AIMS Small Research Grants in Climate Change Science.

From energy exploitation and agriculture, to urbanization, transportation and the construction of infrastructure, African countries have a unique opportunity to establish ‘Climate Smart’ economies by applying research-based concepts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while creating economic value. This requires a deeper understanding of the casual factors of climate change and how best to apply the increasing volume of climate change-related information to mitigate, beneficially exploit, and/or adapt to the impacts of climate change on humans, the environment, and the economy. African scientists are hereby called upon to apply for Small Research Grants to support projects that would address these and other related issues, and contribute to the development of ‘greener’ and ‘smarter’ economies in Africa.

These Grants will support projects that are at the upper limit of the research-innovation value chain — i.e. projects that are likely to make a tangible impact. Such projects could be industry-led, community-driven, or policy-led, among other possibilities. These projects should make substantive use of mathematical concepts to provide solutions to climate change issues in Africa. Projects will be supported for a period of 6 to 12 months at a non-recurring maximum cost of USD 10 000 per Grantee.

This Small Research Grants Program in Climate Change Science is made possible by a grant from the International Development Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada, www.idrc.ca, and financial support from the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), www.international.gc.ca, under the Mathematical Sciences for Climate Change Resilience Program administered by the AIMS Global Secretariat.

The objectives of the AIMS Small Research Grants Program in Climate Change Science are to provide funding:

  • to support the development of early career African academics of postdoctoral standing (or equivalent) who are seeking to establish an independent research/professional career in the climate change science discipline or the mathematical sciences with applications in climate change;
  • for new and innovative, cutting-edge projects including industry-led, community-, and policy-driven projects in climate change science that make substantive use of mathematical concepts;
  • to support proof-of-concept or pilot projects that are geared towards addressing a well-defined climate change challenge in Africa;
  • for projects that will promote uptake of  research-based outputs/results in climate change science for the benefit of countries in Africa and the world at large; and
  • to increase intra- and inter-continental interactions between AIMS Centres of Excellence and other institutions.

Degree programme with international character

Education: Our degree programme includes not only candidates’ work on their own research, but also a structured curriculum that combines research-oriented courses with courses providing general qualifications.

Research: It is a primary mission of the BGHS to offer a structured doctoral training programme for both participating departments, with a strong focus on theories and methods. Sociology at Bielefeld University features a plurality of theoretical orientations unparalleled at any other German university. In the Department of History, all chairs are staffed by professors who have a record in theoretical reflection, are interested in special methods or are particularly attentive to – among other areas – historiography. Moreover, Bielefeld is well-known for interdisciplinary research. While disciplinary strength is the prerequisite for interdisciplinary exchange, the BGHS fosters dialogue on theoretical and methodological issues in all of its areas of research.

Areas of research: Both the broad range of research and teaching capacities in history and sociology at Bielefeld University as well as familiarity with the current state of research guarantees that a large spectrum of dissertation projects can be supervised. In history, thematic fields range from ancient to contemporary history and from political, social and cultural history to the comparative history of modern societies, as well as transnational and global history. In sociology, supervision can be provided in thematic areas such as world society studies, social inequality, social policy, migration studies, sociology of networks or organisations and professions, just to name a few. Chairs in political science, didactics of social sciences and social anthropology further extend the scope of potential supervision. Teaching and supervisory capacities overlap in a considerable number of thematic fields.

Supervision: Supervisors for doctoral projects are found within specific areas of research. It is key to the success of your application that you are able to assign your project to at least one area of research. Therefore, when writing your covering letter you should take the opportunity to locate your own research within at least one area of research. Therefore you should clarify in one section of your covering letter in which area(s) of research you locate your own research. Doctoral researchers and their supervisors sign a Supervision agreement to ensure regular, reliable supervision of all research projects.

Internationality: The diverse biographical, social, and cultural backgrounds of BGHS community members are an exceptional resource that enriches research and (international) cooperation. For this reason, increasing the percentage of international doctoral researchers is a central aim of the BGHS. BGHS degree programme courses are held either in German or in English. In addition, there are many other ways in which the BGHS helps build international networks for its doctoral researchers.
