Eligibility period

Scholarship program eligibility period rules take into account all doctoral semesters (funded or not) completed prior to May 1, 2019.

When calculating the eligibility period, the FRQNT will consider all unregistered or part-time semesters for which registrar attestations are provided in the application. The applicant must verify his/her eligibility by consulting the equivalents table for unregistered or part-time semesters in the Toolbox.

The FRQNT will also consider the number of master’s and doctoral semesters for which the applicant received funding from a recognized funding agency (e.g. NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC, the Fonds de recherche du Québec, etc.) to ensure that the support does not exceed 18 semesters.

Eligibility period for applicants registered in direct-entry doctoral programs (bachelor’s to doctorate) and fast-track master’s/doctoral programs

Applicants admitted to a doctoral program after completing their bachelor’s degree and those who fast-tracked to a doctoral program without submitting a thesis may apply to the doctoral scholarships competition (DE) in the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of their graduate studies (between their 7th and 15thsemesters). Semesters that are completed when the scholarship comes into effect will be subtracted from the funding period. Under no circumstances will funding be granted before the 7th semester or after the 15th semester.

Applicants who hold a master’s degree when beginning their doctoral studies must apply for the doctoral scholarships competition.

Doctoral scholarship eligibility period

Applicants are eligible for the doctoral research scholarships competition (DE) during twelve (12) consecutive semesters (or the equivalent) of the first fifteen (15) semesters of their full-time doctoral studies. However, the eleventh (11th) and twelfth (12th) semesters of funding are conditional on the initial submission of the thesis before the end of the twelfth funded semester. Under no circumstances will funding be granted after an applicant’s 15th doctoral program semester.

Eligibility period exceptions

Scholarship eligibility period exceptions will only be made in circumstances that are beyond the applicant’s control. In such cases, all supporting documents must be submitted along with the application.

Applicants who suspend their studies for a maternity or parental leave may ask to extend their eligibility for a maximum period of 12 months per leave. In such cases, all supporting documents must be submitted along with the request.

When the applicant is a person with a disability under the Act to secure handicapped persons in the exercise of their rights with a view to achieving social, school and workplace integration (R.S.Q. c. E-20.1), the eligibility period requirements do not apply. However, the doctoral scholarship period remains the same (three years). In such cases, all supporting documents must be submitted along with the application.

Universities may support two competition applications per year.

Applicant preselection is the sole responsibility of the university. A table of preselection deadlines at the different universities is available in the Toolbox.

University staff in charge of preselecting applicants should consult the Instructions for Preselecting Candidates in the Toolbox.

University staff in charge of preselecting applicants must fill out the candidate nomination form, which is available in the FRQNT FRQnet system. The form must be submitted electronically by September 22nd, 2018, at 4 p.m.

Submitting an Application

Preselected applicants must create a FRQnet account. The FRQNT will then contact the preselected applicants to have them complete the electronic application form. Applicants may consult the document Instructions for completing an application in the Toolbox.

Apply For (ICFP) Safety 2018 Reporting Fellowship

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) more than 5 million people die each year as a result of injuries, accounting for 9 percent of deaths globally. This includes injuries from traffic crashes, acts of violence against oneself or others, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings, among other causes.

Safety 2018 is a milestone event in the field of injury prevention and safety promotion. Every two years, this world conference brings together over 1,000 of the world’s leading researchers, practitioners, policy makers and activists to discuss experiences and solutions that aim to reduce the burden of unintentional injuries. The 13th World Conference, under the theme “Advancing injury and violence prevention towards SDGs,” will be hosted by WHO and the Thai Government in Bangkok, from Nov. 5-7, 2018.

About the Safety 2018 Reporting Fellowship

With the continued support of WHO, ICFJ will select 12 journalists for the Safety 2018 reporting fellowship. The fellows will deepen their understanding of injury prevention and sharpen the skills needed to cover this often under-reported topic by attending a two-day workshop ahead of the event. Afterwards, they will have the opportunity to cover the conference sessions, and to meet and interview global experts.

WHO and ICFJ have organized similar opportunities for journalists in the past including workshops ahead of Safety 2016 and the 2nd High Level Road Safety Conference. As well as a regional road safety journalism training in Sri Lanka. In total, fellows who participated in these programs have published over 150 stories on road safety and injury prevention topics.

Apply

ICFJ invites journalists from all over the world to apply for the Safety 2018 Reporting Fellowship. The fellowship will include a workshop prior to the conference on Nov. 3-4, 2018, and attendance at the conference sessions from Nov. 5-7.

During the workshop, ICFJ trainers and WHO experts will provide an overview of different safety issues, including road safety, water safety and drowning prevention, violence-related injury, and other safety and injury prevention topics. Trainers also will work on strengthening the fellows’ reporting skills, with a particular focus on tracking down data from different sources, creating data-driven reports, and developing visualizations and graphics to engage audiences.

The 2018 Safety Reporting Fellowship program will cover all fellowship-related costs, including travel to the conference, accommodations and registration. Journalists who apply for the fellowship must be fluent in English. Priority will be given to journalists from low– or middle-income countries. Please note that preference will be given to those who haven’t participated in a WHO training workshop before. Applicants will be asked to provide the following:

  • An essay (no more than 500 words) detailing your motivation and goals for seeking the fellowship, including three specific changes you hope to make to your work as a result of the workshop;
  • At least one fleshed-out story idea (300 – 500 words) for an in-depth safety and injury-prevention reporting project that incorporates data. Applicants may focus on their own countries, and include ways to use digital tools and social media to engage audiences in a dialogue about these vital safety issues;
  • A commitment to produce at least three safety stories during and after the conference;
  • A letter of support from an editor or newsroom manager endorsing the journalist’s participation in the program to demonstrate understanding of the fellowship’s value and support for publishing, posting and/or broadcasting the journalist’s coverage of the conference and story project;
  • A brief biography (up to 300 words);
  • A resume or curriculum vitae;
  • Two samples of work focusing on safety or injury prevention published/posted/broadcast recently (after 2015).

Selection will be based on the journalists’ professional qualifications, relevant experience such as demonstrated interest in the topic of injury prevention or road safety, English-language proficiency, and endorsement by a newsroom manager.

The application deadline is Friday, Aug. 17, 2018 (9:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern Daylight Time). ICFJ will inform the finalists by Sept. 7, 2018.

Open Application: MRC PhD Studentships 2018

MRCG at LSHTM invites application for two PhD studentships from interested persons who are of African or UK citizens and meet the stipulated qualifications.

Project 1

PhD title“Studies to characterise the effects of dose number, age and genetic factors on the immune response to the human papillomavirus vaccine (Gardasil9®)”

Project description

We will be conducting a clinical trial of the 9-valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil9®) which will compare the immune responses to a 1st and subsequent doses of the vaccine in 3 ages groups (4-8 year-olds, 9-14 year olds and 15-26 year-olds).  There is significant global interest in the use of 1 dose HPV vaccine schedules to facilitate vaccine rollout, particularly in low and middle income countries, and a number of clinical trials and other studies are currently investigating one dose regimens.

Within a sub-study of the main trial, we aim to more fully characterise the early immune responses to the vaccine at a cellular level and transcriptional level and to investigate other factors including HLA type which may influence the long terms protection HPV vaccines generate.

Aims and objectives

This PhD will characterise the early innate, plasma call and memory B-cell responses following one and subsequent doses of an HPV vaccine in a subset in females in the different age groups enrolled into the main trial and relate these responses to the magnitude and duration of the subsequent serological response to the vaccine.

According the interests and skills of the successful candidate the associations between HLA type and serological responses will also be examined in the entire cohort.

Understanding the factors determining the long term serological protection the HPV vaccines generate is expected influence vaccine scheduling decisions and future HPV vaccine development

Project 2

PhD title: “Effect of 2g of azithromycin given to women during labour on antibiotic resistance and mechanisms of gram negative bacteria”

Project description

This project is based on a double blind randomized clinical trial, namely PregnAnZI-2, where women during labour take 2 grams of azithromycin or placebo. The primary objective of this trial is to assess the effect of the intervention on neonatal mortality.

The overall public health impact of the PregnAnZI trial will depend on the balance between the benefits and the risk. The major risk envisaged is the induction and community establishment of resistance to azithromycin and other antibiotics.

The organisms that carry higher rates of antibiotic resistance are gram negative bacteria. Gram negative bacteria are also important causes of neonatal sepsis (causing almost 50% of the cases in West Africa).

Objectives

In this PhD we want to focus on gram negative bacteria. The main objectives will be:

  • To assess the effect of 2gr of azithromycin given to women during labour in the prevalence of bacterial colonization of gram negative bacteria in women and their newborns.
  • To determine the genes related to antibiotic resistance of gram negative bacteria and the risk to establish this resistance in the community.

Call for applications: OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship – 2019 Training Programme

The Indigenous Fellowship Programme was launched in 1997 by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the context of the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People. The aim of the programme is to give indigenous persons the opportunity to gain knowledge on the UN system and mechanisms dealing with human rights issues in general and indigenous issues in particular. Trained participants are better equipped to assist their organisations and communities in protecting and promoting their rights. This training programme is available in 4 languages: English, Spanish, French and Russian.

Please note that the deadline to receive applications for the 2019 English language component of the Indigenous Fellowship Programme is: 30 August 2018.

The English language component of the Indigenous Fellowship Programme (IFP) was established in 1997. It takes place at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland and lasts for 4 weeks, usually coinciding with the annual meeting of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP).

The objective of this training programme is to enhance the knowledge of indigenous peoples on existing international human rights instruments and mechanisms, so they can use them to more effectively advocate for the rights of their communities and raise their concerns at the international level. At the end of the Programme, trained fellows are also in a better position to share and give training sessions on the knowledge gained to their indigenous communities and organizations.

The training combines theoretical sessions with briefings on the UN system, OHCHR mandate and activities, international Human Rights instruments (Treaties, Conventions, Declarations) and mechanisms (Human Rights Council, Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures) – including those more specifically dealing with indigenous issues (UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, ILO Convention 169, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, EMRIP). Practical assignments and exercises also help better integrate the theory. Fellows are also given the opportunity to actively participate in the annual meeting of EMRIP. Additionally, they get introduced to the work of other UN and specialized agencies (ILO, WIPO, UNESCO, UNICEF) and of Geneva based Human Rights NGOs, including DoCip.

Participants of the Fellowship Programme are entitled to the following: a return ticket (economy class) from their country of residence to Geneva; a daily or monthly stipend to cover their basic needs in Geneva, including modest accommodation, food and transport; a basic health insurance for the duration of the Programme. OHCHR will not cover any additional expenses such as visa fees and travel insurance.

How to apply?

We strongly encourage you to send your application form well before the deadline.

Fellowship applications will only be taken into consideration if they are fully completed.
Both parts I and II of the application form must be signed and sent by regular post at the following address:

Cooperating partners can be renowned ensembles, choreographers, and also institutions and personalities from dance- or choreographic training institutions. The plans for the fellowship are to be prearranged together with this partner. Please note that you need to provide the video-material online, e.g. by secure file upload to a video portal. You can specify the links and passwords (if any) in the application form. For technical reasons we do not recommend to use YouTube or Dailymotion for your upload. Videos, whose links are not functional, can unfortunately not be considered.

  • Any subject or style is welcome, though the example should fit within the narrative of the current draft of the report and illustrate the issues discussed.
  • Supporting data, literature, policy documents, weblinks, etc. should be referenced in the description in order for the WDR team to establish the veracity of the example.
  • The competition is open to students from all countries, but entries must be written in English.
  • The judges’ verdict is final.
  • Examples cannot be altered or changed after they have been entered. No correspondence will be entered into once work has been submitted.

APPLY FOR THE 4th EDITION OF SCIENCE BY WOMEN PROGRAM REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS FOR VISITING SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN SPANISH CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE

Following the success of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Edition, the Women for Africa Foundation (FMxA), in line with its mission of contributing to the development of Africa through its women, is launching the 4th Edition of SCIENCE BY WOMEN programme, with the aim to promote African women’s leadership in scientific research and technology transfer and to foster the capacity of the research centres in their home countries. The main goal is to enable African women researchers and scientists to tackle the great challenges faced by Africa through research in health, agriculture and food security, water, energy and climate change, as well as mathematics and economic science.

Women’s lives are significantly affected by the repercussions of uncontrolled development; however, social, structural and economic barriers limit their capacity to tackle the great challenges faced by the continent. The gender disparities in science and technology in both the public and private spheres affect Africa’s population as a whole. Narrowing this gap, which has severe consequences on the balanced and sustainable development of African countries, is vital to achieve long-term progress and equal growing.

The programme´s ultimate goal is to enable African women researchers to play a leading role in the transition of Africa to a knowledge-based and innovation-led economy through research that can be transferred into products, processes, services and technologies having impact on people´s lives.

To achieve this ambitious goal, FMxA collaborates with the Spanish Centres of Excellence, whose prestige is unanimously recognized throughout Spain and internationally, thereby ensuring excellence in scientific research in various fields. In this 4th edition our associated research centres are:

Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO)
Centre for Genomic Regulation
Barcelona Graduate School of Economics
Vall d´Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR)
Institute for Neuroscience (IN)
