Call For Application: Empower a Billion Lives with the IEEE Power Electronics Society ($1 Million Funding)
Empower a Billion Lives is a competition sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society that seeks to unleash innovation through the development and demonstration of new regionally relevant, holistic, scalable, and economically viable solutions by leveraging 21st-century technologies which feature exponentially declining prices and have shown rapid global adoption.
Registration is open now. The competition includes five regional rounds in India, Africa, China, Europe, and the Americas followed by a Global Final. The competition is agnostic to energy sources, technologies, business models, and will primarily evaluate potential impact and ability to rapidly and sustainably scale the solutions to a Billion customers. Energy access is a global challenge.
There are 3 billion people in the world living in energy poverty, and over 1 billion people without any access to electricity. So far, only 1.8 million people have gained tier 2 energy access by using off-grid electric services.
To address energy poverty, more of the same may not be the answer. New strategies are needed to scale energy access solutions 1000x.
Solutions must provide Tier 2 energy access (200+ watt hours per day), which includes:
- Household uses – Household uses include: single house lighting, phone charging, telecommunication, entertainment, air circulation, refrigeration, water pumping, home cooling, smart cooking, electric two- and three-wheeler charging, etc.
- Community uses – Community uses include: multiple home solutions for public lighting, water pumping & purification, education and health facilities, etc.
- Productive uses – Productive uses include: agriculture processing, light manufacturing (sewing, pottery, weaving, carpentry), construction, food processing, commerce, new incoming opportunities, etc.
Energy access means opportunity
Access to electricity is critical to health care delivery and to the overarching goal of universal health coverage. The WHO defines access to essential medicines and technologies as one of the key factors in ensuring universal health coverage. Most of these essential technologies require electricity, and without electricity, many health care interventions simply cannot be provided. Despite this, a study found that only 26% of health facilities in the Sub-Saharan Africa has access to reliable electricity.
Registration for participant teams will begin in May 2018. Student Teams, Research Laboratories, Small and Medium-sized Companies, International Corporations, Nonprofit Organizations, etc., are all encouraged to participate.
Empower a Billion Lives Time Line:
- Online round – May 1, 2018 to Aug 31, 2018; Registered teams present their solution concept and a three-minute pitch video.
- Regional rounds – Nov 2018 to Jan 2019; Qualified teams demonstrate their solution prototypes and pitch their business ideas at a regional round nearest to them.
- Field test – Qualified teams complete a 3 month long field pilot in a region of their choosing.
- Global final – Sep 29, 2019 to Oct 3, 2019; IEEE ECCE Conference, Qualified teams demonstrate the ruggedized prototypes, field test results, and final business plan.

In case of university teachers/researchers/artists, the invitation letter should not be just a formal admission for a scholarship stay, but it should reflect a certain level of host institution’s interest in applicant’s teaching and/or research/artistic stay in the framework of the NSP. Invitation letter must be issued for the same period as the period stated by the applicant in his/her online application and it cannot be older than 3 months on the day of the application deadline.
[3] Legal entity according to the section 7 letters a) – c) of the Act No. 172/2005 on organisation of state research and development funding, as amended, which has a valid certificate of eligibility to carry out research and development according to the section 26a article 11 or article 12 of the same Act – i.e. public, private or state universities, research institutions eligible to carry out a doctoral (PhD) study programme (i.e. external education institutions), Slovak Academy of Sciences and its institutes, departmental research institutes or non-governmental organisations carrying out research and development.
6. Selection procedure
Selection of scholarship holders is carried out by the Selection Committee appointed by the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic. The Selection Committee award the scholarships based upon the documents attached to applicants’ online applications. The Committee focuses mostly on:
- reasons, why the applicant has decided to study, teach, conduct research or artistic activities in the respective host institution;
- programme of applicant’s study, research/artistic or teaching stay and how the applicant will use the results of his/her scholarship stay for further studies or teaching/research/artistic activities;
- applicant’s professional and personal qualities;
- study or research achievements;
- attitude of applicant’s host institution toward the applicant in the admission/invitation letter;
- overall quality of submitted application.
Scholarships and/or travel allowances are not legally enforceable; to be or not to be awarded a scholarship is influenced by meeting all the formal requirements of the programme according to the respective call for applications, applicant’s quality, content of applicant’s proposed stay and its necessity, and budget possibilities of the NSP according to the respective call for applications.
SAIA, n. o., will inform every applicant about being/not being awarded the scholarship within 8 weeks from the application deadline.
SAIA, n. o., will issue a Letter of Award (official confirmation on being awarded a scholarship in the framework of the NSP) for every scholarship holder. This document will be sent to every scholarship holder together with other information and requirements for the scholarship payment. Eligible applicants under the category A) and B) (students and PhD students) are obliged, in case of being awarded the scholarship, deliver original of confirmation on studies to SAIA, n. o., in Bratislava. This document will confirm that the scholarship holder is still a regular student or PhD student of the respective university/research organisation during his/her study/research stay in Slovakia (in case that the confirmation is issued in other than Slovak, English or Russian language, official translation of the document into one of aforementioned languages is required).

Apply Now For The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UC Berkeley
The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program
The University of California, Berkeley has partnered with The MasterCard Foundation in a collaborative, global network of education institutions and non-profit organizations that believe education is a catalyst for social and economic advancement. The Program aims to benefit 15,000 young people over 10 years, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The future of Africa will be shaped by its young people, including those talented, yet economically disadvantaged students who face significant barriers to accessing quality education. To harness the potential impact of this generation, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program provides next-generation leaders who are committed to the social and economic transformation of their continent with access to quality education by delivering comprehensive financial, social, and academic support throughout their secondary and university education and supports their transition to further study or to the workforce.
The Program at UC Berkeley
At UC Berkeley, the Program will provide support to at least 113 students from 2012 to 2020, and is open to both undergraduate and professional Master’s students. Students seeking doctoral degrees are not eligible for this Program. To be considered for the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, both undergraduate and graduate degree seekers must first be admitted to the university through the regular admissions process. Once students apply for University admission, the Program will invite them to apply for the Scholarship if they meet eligibility requirements. Please refer to the Apply page for more information on the application process.
