Nigeria, Ghana clash as GOtv Boxing Night 9 holds

The Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos, will this afternoon witness the sporting rivalry Nigeria and Ghana when two Ghanaian boxers take on their Nigerian opponents at the GOtv Boxing Night 9. At stake will be national and personal pride as well as the N1.5million cash prize for the best boxer at the event.

The seven-fight event will see Ghanaian Raphael “Iron King” Kwabena King taking on the yet undefeated Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, national light welterweight champion while his compatriot, Richard “Desert Warrior” Amefu confronts the explosive Oto “Joe Boy”, national lightweight champion.

Fijabi’s last two opponents looked pitiable after a deluge of rapid-fire punches ended their aspirations. King is also undefeated, winning eight and drawing one of his nine fights. Amefu is no slouch either, losing only two of 14 fights.

Another undefeated man billed to fight is Jude “Great Jude” Iloh, the national light heavyweight champion, who goes up against Adewale “Masevex” Masebinu. Iloh remains unbeaten in seven pro fights, five of which he won by KOs. Masebinu is, however, persuaded that Iloh’s record will have no bearing on their encounter.

In the cruiserweight division, fans will get to watch the much awaited national title defence by Ekeng “Fighting Policeman” Henshaw, ranked seventh by the African Boxing Union.

His opponent is Idowu “ID Cabasa” Okusote (also known as Ojuelegba Terror).

Okusote’s last fight was won via a knockout. He has lost one fight-against one of the country’s top boxers, former Commonwealth champion, Isaac Ekpo, who also trains him.

The other light heavyweight clash will feature the Bariga mauler, Kabiru “KB Godson” Towolawi against Emmanuel “Man Mopol” Igwe.

Other debutants include Sikiru “Omo Iya Eleja” Shogbesan, who takes on the slightly more experienced Prince “Lion” Nwoye in a lightweight challenge contest.

Also debuting is the pair of Ebube “Coded Man” Edeh, a youngster from whom much is expected, and Semiu “Jagaban” Olapade. Ede was discovered at the GOtv Boxing NextGen 1 last February and has been under the tutelage of coaches Joe Mensah and Obisia Nwakpa.
