Apply For Data2X Announces Press Fellowship to the UN World Data Forum in Dubai in October

Data2X, an alliance hosted by the UN Foundation, today announced a press fellowship focused on gender data to be held in October 2018 alongside the second UN World Data Forum in Dubai. As part of the fellowship, journalists will receive a stipend to cover travel costs and will have access to exclusive briefings.

The UN World Data Forum will gather 1500 leaders from government, business, civil society, and academia in Dubai from October 22 to 24 to examine the significant role of data in achieving sustainable development. Critical to this conversation is the need for good gender data – complete, unbiased data about the lives of women and girls – to bring about positive change for all people, especially those that are most vulnerable. Gender data can include labor data that considers both paid and unpaid work, data about access to financial services, and data on birth, death, and marriage registration. Women are disproportionately impacted by lack of data in each of these areas, and have the potential to benefit tremendously if gender data is collected and used.

“Good policy and programmatic decisions must be based on good data, but most data about women and girls is incomplete or missing altogether,” said Emily Courey Pryor, Executive Director of Data2X. “We will not be able to achieve gender equality and improve development outcomes for all without complete, unbiased data about lived realities. We hope this fellowship will provide tools and access to encourage reporting on the role of gender data in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”

A key component of the programme of the UN World Data Forum, which is being organized by the United Nations and hosted by the government of the United Arab Emirates, will address strengthening the use of data in journalism and improving data communication. This press fellowship will enable selected journalists to cover gender data and data for sustainable development issues through attending the UN World Data Forum in Dubai and participating in an accompanying set of curated private briefings.

This fellowship is intended for any journalist who covers gender equality, data, or sustainable development issues and would find this opportunity beneficial to their reporting. The application deadline is July 11, 2018. Apply here. For more information, please contact Nina Rabinovitch Blecker at nblecker@data2x.org.
